Packanack Cooperative Nursery School

The class is aligned with the NJ Curriculum Standards and is designed to prepare its students for a seamless transition into 1st Grade in the Wayne Public School System. 

Reading/Language Arts

Students will learn the alphabet and the relationships between letters and sounds.  This will enable the children to learn new words and develop phonemic awareness.  Their ability to read and comprehend simple stories will begin to grow.  Students will be given a variety of opportunities to learn, write and express themselves.  Students will be asked to demonstrate their individual potential and mastery throughout the school year.  A few skills to be demonstrated are:

  • Recognizing and naming upper and lowercase letters

  • Recognizing letter/sound relationshipsBlending sounds into words

  • Identifying and producing rhyming words

  • Identifying and reading kindergarten sight words

  • Identifying and creating word families

  • Identifying basic story elements

  • Demonstrating comprehension through questioning and answering

  • Expressing thoughts, feeling and ideas clearly in written and spoken language

  • Identifying the mechanics of a simple sentence 


Mathematics

Students will learn about numbers and what they represent, identify basic geometric shapes and learn basic addition and subtraction facts.  They will be counting, reading and writing numbers and developing an understanding of basic place value. Students will develop fluency, become mathematical thinkers and create and solve simple number stories.   Students will be asked to demonstrate their individual potential and mastery throughout the school year.  A few skills to be demonstrated are:

  • Counting by ones and tens to 100
  • Counting objects in groups and comparing their quantities to identify greater than and less than
  • Understanding that putting together is addition
  • Understanding that taking away is subtraction
  • Adding and subtracting numbers through 10 using drawings and manipulatives
  • Creating and solving number stories using numbers 0-10
  • Identifying and creating patternsIdentifying basic shapes
  • Describing attributes of basic shapes 


Extracurricular Activities 

In addition to their academics, students will participate in a weekly music class, physical education class and art class. Students will also take part in a book swap, encouraging literacy and love of books and stories.
